Clock of Trainers
Working with boys from Dartmouth Secondary School in partnership with the Herbert Art Gallery and Creative Partnerships.
The initial inspiration for the project came from the Throne of Weapons. The throne was made by the Mozambican artist Cristovao Canhavato (Kester) from decommissioned weapons collected since the end of the civil war in 1992.
We explored what the original artwork represented and why, and then began to explore the boys own culture and concerns. Through various designs and discussions the final artwork produced was a large replica of a grandfather clock taken from the Herbert's collection, made entirely from trainers, which explored issues of time running out, peer pressure and identity. We also worked alongside Sound artist Ian Armstrong to produce a sound installation which played inside the sculpture.
